THINK ABOUT IT: AN INTERVIEW WITH AVERY LYNCH
BY LUNA CARDOSO
Indie singer-songwriter Avery Lynch is an expert in storytelling— known for crafting heartfelt, emotionally rich songs. "think about it," her latest release, is a breakthrough in her career, opening a new era of creative development. In this track, she hones her distinct voice, which adds a powerful addition to the track by combining universal ideas with personal stories. Songs like "Rain" and "the boys who don't know what they want" highlight Lynch's lyricism and ability to capture complex emotions, resonating deeply with listeners.
'think about it' is not just a song for Lynch, but a personal journey. She molded the song's sound in a way that felt even more genuine and intimate. Lynch skillfully composed the song's melancholic piano and delicate guitar to reflect the lyrics' nuanced emotional content. Her delicate yet powerful vocal delivery contrasts with the turmoil of the words, emphasizing the feeling of reclaiming power after heartbreak. The slow increase in the piano throughout the song deepens the emotions, culminating in a moment of clarity where she no longer shoulders the weight of the breakup.
In a recent interview, Lynch shared her creative process, the inspiration behind the track, and how stepping into the producer role influenced her music-making approach.
The song originated from a simple yet powerful moment of inspiration. "The first thing that really came to me was the line 'when you left me to just think about it'—it arrived along with the melody," she recalls. This harmony between lyrics and melody is central to her songwriting. "Sometimes I have a lyrical idea that brings its own melody, and that was one of those situations," she explains. The song then developed naturally under Lynch's natural creative direction.
Interestingly, "think about it" wasn’t inspired by her own experiences but by her sister’s heartbreak. "My sister was going through a tough breakup and told me, 'I can't find songs I completely relate to. Can you make one for me?'" Lynch shares. Determined to capture her sister’s emotions, she carefully crafted lyrics that honoured her sister's experience without actually taking the words from her mouth. She was determined to convey her feelings while keeping the song universally relatable. This balance showcases Lynch’s strength as a songwriter—her ability to translate personal stories into music that speaks to a broader audience.
The song’s creation also marked an evolution in her role as a producer. While Lynch has long collaborated with her boyfriend, Jordan, who has produced most of her music, "think about it" saw her take on a more hands-on role. "I've always worked closely with Jordan in the studio—he's produced 95% of my songs—but this time, I really stepped up in the production process," she says. The two worked side by side, experimenting late into the night in their home studio. "We walked just a few feet from our bedroom to the studio, playing around with new sounds until 2 a.m. That’s when we came up with some of the guitar parts that shaped the final track," she recalls. This close and collaborative setting gives the song an organic, personal feel.
During the interview Lynch also emphasised the importance of trusting her instincts in her artistic journey, stating that even a writing block doesn't prevent her from creating amazing work.
"think about it" marks the beginning of a new stage in her career, in which she fully embraces songwriting and production. "This next wave of music is going to be different, but more Avery production," she teases. With over 100 million streams and a dedicated fanbase, she’s set to continue evolving as an artist. Fans can expect more deeply personal tracks exploring love, loss, and growth. As Lynch moves forward, each new song brings her closer to fully realizing her unique artistic vision.
